The iconic 1948 Olympic Torch lit the way on Monday, 4th June as the long awaited Downham Market Parade took place.
The torch arrived into town just before 1pm to take part in the 170-mile route around West Norfolk, which finishes at Lynnsport in Kings Lynn.
British, European and world champion race walker Mrs Duhig and Ms Cawkwell, a member of women-only running group Downham Dollies, were nominated to carry the torch as they both work to promote and support sports and activity in the area.
Students from Downham Market High School were then nominated to carry the torch to Wimbotsham, as it made its way to the final stop of the day being Upwell.
The parade was a success, as a fabulous turnout of people gathered and were lining in the streets as the parade took place. Many people also came together to take part and support the event all whilst having some Diamond Jubilee inspired fun.
After arriving at the Howdale, newly-elected town mayor Robin Pegg officially opened the Carnival Day events on the park which had plenty to of activities to offer, such as bouncy castles, carnival rides, game stalls, face painting and ‘Laser Combat’ which proved to be very popular. As well as these activities and more there was also a wide range of food, drink and other stalls selling various things.

In addition to the parade there are plenty more events going on throughout the week for people to look forward to and get themselves involved in, other events in the 38th Downham Market Festival include a series of Art Exhibitions taking place in the Town Hall, Citizen of the year awards, Games Day, Songbirds Concert, Chrilden’s Fancy Dress Disco and much more.
