Report on Downham Market Health Centre

Downhamweb has unearthed a very interesting report about the health centre in Paradise Road which was published on the NHS East of England website ahead of a board meeting tomorrow. Many of you may remember the strategic health authority commissioned a review of the centre earlier this year after four “serious incidents”, the suspension of two GPs and the death of a vulnerable patient between March 2010 and March 2011. The independent review was undertaken by the Collingham Healthcare Education Centre and covered the period before the service was taken over in April 2011 by Vida Healthcare, which was praised in this report for “getting a grip” on the management and the clinical governance of their services. Some of the more interesting finds in the report includes receptionists at the practice having to recruit locum GPs while the practice’s two doctors were suspended and that hundreds of unchecked pathology results were discovered – some dating back a year. The primary conclusion of the review was that the four serious incidents revealed a “deficiency in safe general practice” but that despite “significant risks” in the health centre there were no “definite examples” where patients have come to harm. Tomorrow s NHS East of England board meeting is open to patients and members of the public and will be held from 10am at Victoria House, Capital Park, Fulbourn, Cambridge, CB21 5XB.
