The community portal site for Downham Market since 2007

Date announced for Downham Games 2016

The Downham Games will be held on the 12th June this year. This is the 5th Games and it is hoped that it will be a fun packed event with lots for everyone to do.

This year the event will be celebrating Rio 2016. It is intended that the colourful event will commence at 10.45 AM with an opening ceremony and closing at 2.30 PM with a medal and closing ceremony.

Organiser Frances Rayner said ‘This year we have got financial support from Downham Market Town Council, West Norfolk Sports Council, Downham Tandoori and Arbuckles. These local businesses, along with others such as the Angel Pub Watlington and The Hare Arms at Stow, are also offering promotional support because they love what we do and feel we are providing a true community event which brings friends, families and individuals together to have fun’

The athletics competition is still firmly on the agenda. The only part of the Games where there is a small charge which is due to everyone getting a medal for taking part – £1 children and £2 for adults. A 6 event competition for anyone over the age of 8 years – medals for all as well as age group trophies and also a 6 activity event for any child 7 years and under. Ryston Runners will be on hand to support this event. Alive Leisure Downham Market will also be on hand with competitions, membership offers and nutritional advice. Both have been involved since we started in 2012 – we are very appreciative of this.

Sports already booked include archery, cycling, football and cricket and this list is likely to grow as the event approaches. Other activities include Nerf Gun Wars.

NHS health checks and support from the Health Trainer Service will also be available.

Frances said ‘There is something for everyone with some firm favourites and something new to keep everyone interested. Regular updates can be found on our Facebook page – The Downham Games’

If there are any clubs or activities out there that would like to get involved then do get in touch with Frances at [email protected] or ring on 07802448836. There is also a requirement for volunteers to help at the event so if you are interested get in touch.
